Flow straightening analysis in an open channels flume
Fully developed flow is the most important aspect in turbine blade test facilities (flume). A steady flow will give the best flow condition for the experimentation of hydro turbine. This study will focus on the flow straightening effect in the flume experimentation in order to reduce the turbulence...

This study will focus on the flow straightening effect in the flume experimentation in order to reduce the turbulence and produce a steady flow inside the test section. Three types of flow straightener were identified and analyzed, namely vane tube type, honeycomb and rectangular shape of flow straightener. Ansys CFX (Fluid) Solver was used to run a simulation of the straightening effect. The results indicated that there was significant difference between all the three designs in term of pressure drop across the straighteners. Based on the investigation of the same length and diameter of the three types straightener, the lowest pressure drop of 71.48 Pa was recorded for the rectangular shape with 0.2032 mm of entrance diameter and 0.5 m length whilst for the vane tube type, the highest pressure drop was recorded from the flow. These finding led to the conclusion that flow straightener with rectangular shape gave the lowest value of pressure drop for every dimension selected compared to the honeycomb and vane tube types flow straightener. 2013-06 Undergraduates Project Papers NonPeerReviewed application/pdf en http://umpir.ump.edu.my/id/eprint/8331/1/Flow%20straightening%20analysis%20in%20an%20open%20channels%20flume%20%28Table%20of%20content%29.pdf application/pdf en http://umpir.ump.edu.my/id/eprint/8331/2/Flow%20straightening%20analysis%20in%20an%20open%20channels%20flume%20%28Abstract%29.pdf application/pdf en http://umpir.ump.edu.my/id/eprint/8331/11/Flow%20straightening%20analysis%20in%20an%20open%20channels%20flume%20%28Chapter%201%29.pdf application/pdf en http://umpir.ump.edu.my/id/eprint/8331/14/Flow%20straightening%20analysis%20in%20an%20open%20channels%20flume%20%28References%29.pdf Irwan, Misalam (2013) Flow straightening analysis in an open channels flume.
