In this study, sugar mill effluent (SME) was used as anodic substrate in a double chambered microbial fuel cell for an application of microbial fuel cell. The maximum power density, 140 mW/m2 was achieved with 50% concentration of sugar mill effluent. Maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal obtained was 56 % when 50% concentration of sugar mill effluent was used as anodic substrate. These results demonstrated that sugar mill effluent is a suitable substrate in a microbial fuel cell for bioelectricity production and its treatment.
