Through the examination of corruption causes in developing countries and transition economies, it is suggested that prevailing bribery, hence corruption, imposes a significant tax on foreign direct investment in all regions. Thus the cost of capital for firms increases greatly. The note focuses on the creation of a political will and constructive pressure, as well as assistance from international organizations and donors in fighting corruption, by supporting government reforms in economic policies, institutions, and the pursuit of a healthy civil society. 2012-08-13T15:21:21Z 2012-08-13T15:21:21Z 1998-05 http://documents.worldbank.org/curated/en/1998/05/438765/corruption-development http://hdl.handle.net/10986/11545 English PREM Notes; No. 4 CC BY 3.0 IGO http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/igo/ World Bank World Bank, Washington, DC Publications & Research :: Brief Publications & Research
