Privatization, deregulation, trade liberalization, and sound fiscal and monetary policies were pursued over several administrations. Public finances improved principally as a result of major structural reforms, particularly in the reduction of the state and in the reform of the pension system, but also due to tight controls on spending and extensive reforms in revenue policy and administration.
