It defines the meaning of IoHK as the study of acquired human knowledge and grounds and integrates their understanding with Islam. It involves, among others, a process of going back to the Islamic foundation of human knowledge (ta’sil) to realign the former to the latter. IIUM is the champion of the mission of IoHK and has been implementing IoHK since the University's establishment in 1983. The paper points out there is an absence of a formal method to measure the performance of the implementation of IoHK in academic programmes at IIUM. In this respect, having a tool such as an index is considered to be highly desirable. Consequently, work is currently underway aiming at constructing and developing an appropriate index, otherwise known as the IoHK I. In constructing and developing the index, two major attributes - the concept of IoHK and the Maqasid Al-Shariah- are deemed to be the core components of the index. The former concerns with the presence of IoHK in the curriculum of an academic programme and their implementation while the later relates to the impact of IoHK in terms of its perceived benefits. The proposed IoHK I is useful to be used as a tool in measuring the performance of the implementation of IoHK in academic programmes at IIUM and to other academic providers that emphasize Islamic inputs in their curricula and in capacity building. This paper discusses the proposed IoHK Index (IoHK I). It defines the meaning of IoHK as
the study of acquired human knowledge and grounds and integrates their understanding with
Islam. It involves, among others, a process of going back to the Islamic foundation of human
knowledge (ta’sil) to realign the former to the latter. IIUM is the champion of the mission of
IoHK and has been implementing IoHK since the University's establishment in 1983. The
paper points out there is an absence of a formal method to measure the performance of the
implementation of IoHK in academic programmes at IIUM. In this respect, having a tool such
as an index is considered to be highly desirable. Consequently, work is currently underway
aiming at constructing and developing an appropriate index, otherwise known as the IoHK I.
In constructing and developing the index, two major attributes - the concept of IoHK and the
Maqasid Al-Shariah- are deemed to be the core components of the index. The former
concerns with the presence of IoHK in the curriculum of an academic programme and their
implementation while the later relates to the impact of IoHK in terms of its perceived benefits.
The proposed IoHK I is useful to be used as a tool in measuring the performance of the
implementation of IoHK in academic programmes at IIUM and to other academic providers
that emphasize Islamic inputs in their curricula and in capacity building. |
